Nieuw Prinsenland, junction of the green economy
In the municipality of Steenbergen, on the premises of the Suiker Unie, a new
business park is being developed especially aimed at companies in the Agro
Food sector. The full name of this territorial development is Agro & Food Cluster Nieuw Prinsenland. Nieuw Prinsenland will become the junction of the green economy in the Netherlands; a very innovative business park that will be the first of its kind in the Netherlands!
The aim of this development is to achieve profitable symbiosis and cooperation between companies operating in the agricultural- and food sector, after establishing on the premises of the sugar refinery. Next to this business park, large-scale greenhouse farming is planned.
In the map below, the location of Nieuw Prinsenland is marked with a star.
Nieuw Prinsenland includes:
• 40 hectare autonomous development of the sugar refinery
• 50 hectare net marketable business grounds
• 220 hectare net greenhouse farming
The map below shows that the development of the Nieuw Prinsenland business park is planned west of the sugar refinery, with the greenhouse area in its turn situated to the west of the business park, stretching all the way to the A29/A4 motorway, and very well opened up to this arterial road.
Nieuw Prinsenland wants to contribute to the sustainable development of the region of West Brabant. A 'green' development, in which sustainability is at the centre stage, founded on the following pillars:
• Layout is hydrologically neutral
• Exchange and reuse of residual flows
• Use of residual heat from the sugar refinery (10-20 million m³ natural gas, or the consumption of around 8,300 households)
• The use of a bio mass fermentation installation (around 10 million m3 green gas, that is the consumption of 5,500 households, available for companies residing on the business park and the heating of the greenhouses)
• 6 windmills, with a collective power of 18 megawatt.
• CO2 distribution network
Agro & Food Cluster Nieuw Prinsenland is an initiative of the Suiker Unie and the Tuinbouwontwikkelingsmaatschappij (TOM, horticultural development company). The time schedule of the development process is aimed at enabling the first companies to establish on Nieuw Prinsenland by the end of 2011.
